The tradition of wearing red underwear for luck on New Years’ Eve in Spain

I learned recently that wearing red underwear on New Years’ Eve in Spanish speaking countries is supposed to bring good luck because of the colour. The myth goes that the tradition goes back to the middle age where the red colour was forbidden due to its questionable reputation and connection with witches and devils etcetera.

With the time the meaning of the colour changed, and many people started to believe that red represented life and blood and that is how it became a symbol of good luck. However, due to the past reputation of the colour, the people felt obliged to hide the colour beneath their clothes, and that is how the tradition of wearing red underwear for good luck on New Years’ Eve came alive. Some places in the Spanish speaking countries they say that the red colour doesn’t bring luck in general, but it does bring lots of love and passion for the new year. Others say that the underwear has to be brand new and/or it has to be a gift from someone else.

In case nobody gives you red underwear as a gift to wear on New Years’ Eve you could also wear yellow underwear which is supposed to bring good luck. However, it is essential that you start by wearing it inside out and after the bells ring you should change it to the correct way of wearing it. Perhaps that can help start 2019 in the best way.
